5K Training Guide

A 5K training plan balances easy aerobic running with one or two faster sessions per week — typically short intervals at 5K effort and a tempo run. Most plans run 6–8 weeks across 3–5 sessions weekly. The 5K rewards both speed and aerobic strength, so the best plans keep most running easy and reserve hard efforts for two quality days.

Overview

The 5K is short enough to feel fast the whole way but long enough that pacing and aerobic fitness decide the outcome. Training centres on raising your speed at 5K effort while building the aerobic base that lets you hold it.

A typical week is mostly easy running with two quality sessions: an interval workout (to lift your top-end speed) and a tempo run (to push the pace you can sustain). The long run stays moderate — you are not chasing marathon endurance, just steady aerobic volume.

Key workout types

Intervals

Repeats at 5K effort to raise speed and running economy.

Tempo run

Sustained comfortably-hard running to lift your threshold.

Easy runs

Aerobic base and recovery between quality days.

Strides

Short relaxed accelerations to keep leg speed sharp.

Frequently asked questions

How many days a week should I train for a 5K?

Three to five. Three works if two are quality sessions; more easy running helps if your schedule allows.

What pace should my 5K intervals be?

Run repeats at your goal 5K race effort — fast but controlled, so the last repeat looks like the first.

Should I run the day before a 5K?

A short easy run with a few strides keeps you sharp. Hard efforts that close to race day add fatigue, not fitness.
